Are Refurbished Electronics Really Worth It?

There is a certain stigma when it comes to used electronics. People naturally assume that, because these machines are preloved, they have a host of issues and damages that will be troublesome to fix in the long run. What if it turns out that refurbished electronics are actually worth it?

Prices You Can’t Beat

One overwhelming advantage of buying used goods is the price. You can buy all kinds of refurbished electronics, like LCD monitors, PCs, digital cameras, TVs, and smartphones, to name a few. Depending on the model and availability, you can get older units at up to 50 percent off the market price. It is a huge win for those looking to buy a gadget they can use without breaking the bank.

With older gadgets, people will also assume that one glaring disadvantage is its compatibility with new software. Unless you get a used desktop computer that is over ten years, this won’t be an issue because PC software has a lot of versions that still work well.

You can find fairly new units, so if you’re unsure, do some research or a quick web search for the CPU model to find the release date. The information will give you an idea of how old the machine is. Paying attention to the specs (e.g., a hard drive, processor, and memory, in a computer) of the gadget will save you a whole lot of grief later.

Extensive Testing and Warranty

Another misconception briefly mentioned above is that refurbished electronics are badly damaged or low quality. Part of the reason customers think this way is the lowered prices. That assumption can’t be further from the truth.

Refurbished gadgets undergo extensive testing, which may make them better than new electronics. A new product may be untouched after coming out of the factory, and you may think that it undergoes high-standard quality testing, but that’s not always the case. Used products are tested more thoroughly to ensure existing issues or damages are fixed before they’re resold.

What’s more, is that not all preloved gadgets are damaged. Some are used but look and feel new because they may have been barely used previously.

Preloved electronics bought directly from the factory will have great warranties. Be cautious when buying from third-party stores because the warranty they offer may be different.

Consumerism comes with a lot of problems, including the depletion of natural resources and waste. When you choose to buy refurbished gadgets, you are saving them from going to the landfill. Electronic waste is lessened, and you still have fully functional gadgets bought at a discounted price.

Not buying new also means there’s less demand for these items. Manufacturing, packaging and delivery electronics take up a lot of energy and resources. There will be an unnecessary waste in landfills when older computers are sent there with still-working parts. Additionally, some of the chemicals may leak to the ground and harm nearby bodies of water.

Wrapping It Up

At the end of the day, you alone know if buying refurbished electronics is worth it or not. Weigh the pros and cons, and research as much as you can to arrive at an informed decision. Some preloved gadgets deserve their bad rap but understand that there will always be exceptions.

If you don’t agree with the idea of using a used laptop for work or a hobby, it makes sense to invest more to buy brand-new ones.

However, there are times when it’s better to buy refurbished. One example is when you want to try a brand or a gadget but don’t necessarily want to pay full price. You can test the waters by buying cheaper versions and upgrade later should you choose to.
