How to fix a Wuauserv High CPU Usage Error

  • Go to the search bar near the Windows Start menu

  • Once the search results appear, right-click on Command Prompt and then click on Run as administrator
  • If prompted for permission, click on Yes to proceed
  • Once the Command Prompt opens, type in the command net stop wuauserv, press Enter, and wait for the process to finish
  • Now again, type in the command net stop bits, press Enter, and then wait for the process to finish
  • After the process finishes, minimize the Command Prompt window
  • Press Windows logo key + E to launch the File Explorer
  • Navigate to C:\ > Windows > SoftwareDistribution
  • Delete all the files present in the SoftwareDistribution folder
  • Restore the Command Prompt window
  • Type in the command net start wuauserv, press Enter, and then wait for the process to finish
  • Again, type the command net start bits, press Enter, and then wait for the process to finish
  • After the process finishes, restart your computer

Now check to see if the Wuauserv service is still using a high amount of CPU on your computer.

Solution 4: Stop Wuauserv

  • Press Windows logo key + R to launch the Run application
  • In the dialogue box, type in msc and then press Enter
  • This will open the list of all the services running on your computer
  • From the list of services, locate Windows update and then double-click on it to launch its properties
  • Set the Startup type to Disabled and then click on Stop
  • Finally, click on OK to safely save and exit
  • Now close all open applications and then restart your computer
