A 2020 guide for finding a new job

If, like me, you’ve been through the hassle of trying to find a new job before, you’ll know all about the different challenges that can crop up. If you haven’t had to go on a job hunt before, then get ready for the ride. It’s nowhere near as easy as you might think, and there are a wide variety of hurdles that you have to try and get over if you want to get your dream job. However, try not to be too frightened. Just because something is difficult doesn’t mean it’s not possible, and it’ll actually make getting a job much more satisfying. There are a number of different ways that you can go about trying to get a position, and that’s why I’m here today. Here’s my 2020 guide to looking for a new job.

There are a few things I think you should try and do while you’re looking for a new job. The first thing is to stop thinking that you need to try and go through this process by yourself- there’s no shame in accepting a bit of help every now and then, and there are websites out there than can help you with that. You might be, for instance, struggling to actually find a job vacancy that suits you in the first place. If this is the case, you could look for a website that has a job search engine- all you’ll need to do is enter details about your qualifications and the area you want to work in, and a variety of available positions should be presented to you. It’s then up to you to scroll through these and find ones you think are worth applying for. These kinds of sites can also offer general advice on your career. So check out career tips with Lensa Insights here.

At the start of every job search there is one thing all of us need to worry about- our CV. CVs are the very first thing that potential employers will get from you, and it’s therefore the first impression they’ll have of you (and we all know how important first impressions are!). If your CV isn’t up to scratch, the chances are you’ll just be overlooked and you might not even get a response. That’s why you need to make sure of a few thing- that your CV is neat and tidy, for instance. It should be easy for employers to find any relevant information and clear headings should help with this. Your english should be good as well, so if you’re not amazing grammatically then it’s worth getting someone to check over your CV for you.

Interviews make up another important part of the job application process, so you need to make sure you’re comfortable with them too. Are you good at speaking in pressurised situations or not? If not, it’s worth trying to practice before you go. Get someone to conduct a mock interview with you (you’ll be able to find example questions online) to boost your chances at nailing the real thing.
