Should JEE Advanced be Cancelled?

Should JEE Advanced be Cancelled?

Should JEE Advanced 2020 be cancelled considering the current situation? Should admissions to IITs, NITs, and CFTIs be held based on the JEE 2020 Main scores alone in 2020? These are some of the common questions which the admission body is considering right now. The beneath information provided by PJ Narayanan, Director of IIIT Hyderabad and RL Trikha, Director of FIIT JEE Group, will help in understanding the current situation and what they think about the issue.

According to PJ Narayanan, Director, IIIT, Hyderabad “We are having an extraordinary year, and academics are getting affected very badly due to the COVID-19. The aspiring test-takers need to get a good rank in the JEE Advanced exam, and for that, they need to first appear for JEE Main exam, which means the entire situation can become much more stress full for them.” PJ Narayanan suggests students use the JEE Main exam as the qualifier this year, as the admission criteria for IITs also.

According to RL Trikha, Director, FIIT JEE Group, in this kind of situation, if controlled soon, then both the exams can be conducted by June 15 (JEE Main & JEE Advanced). Even RL Trikha is worried that to apply for JEE Main, attempting board exam is necessary. But, in case it is not possible, and there are higher chances that students might face much pressure. Might be authorities will redesign the format and the students will be allowed to give one exam (JEE Main) in case their committee (JEE) agrees to it.

If JEE Advanced is Cancelled, Should JEE Main be Modified?

The first session of JEE Main exams was held in January, and almost all the students wrote that, but all the students had a chance to write the exam again, and their scores will be considered. Also, many students did not appear for the exam in January and are waiting only for the April test, so in case, the JEE Main has been announced as per a particular pattern, and half of it has been conducted, so there is no point changing that does not exist.

According to RL Trikha, JEE Advanced is the real exam which is conducted by IITs, while JEE Main is conducted to shortlist the eligible candidates for IITs and then for NITs and other government institutes, like CFTIs. So, maybe, they tune the level to IIT JEE Advanced, but the MCQs asked in JEE Advanced are a little bit difficult. The real problem is that the students who appeared for JEE Main might not have great analytical skills and deep conceptual understanding that can help them in solving the problems. So, some solution must be made found out.

Can Cancelling JEE Advanced Speed Up Admission Process?

According to Narayanan, Instead of 14-15 weeks after the JEE Main exam, the classes for JEE Advanced start almost 14-15 weeks which in this case will be cut short by another four weeks or five weeks, if the JEE Advanced step is removed.

And this is not only for IIT admissions only. As the IITs are the most sought-after institutions, and until and unless IIT doesn’t start taking admissions, the admission to NITs, IIITs and then other private engineering and government engineering colleges will not happen.

So, there is a lot of dependency on IIT, which means that the aspirants can utilize the available opportunity to save four to five weeks of delay in the start of academics if this step is taken.

Will Students get sufficient Time to Prepare for JEE Advanced?

According to Trikha, the preparations for the JEE Advanced exam don’t actually start after JEE main only, rather the students who target JEE Advanced start preparing for the exam from their schooling as well. So, it is not like that the students will get one month of preparation time for the exam; those who are serious about appearing in JEE Advanced, attempting JEE Main exam is only a step.
